First the bad news: If you’re flying from the States, there’s no such thing as a cheap direct flight to Greece. That would go against American airlines’ long-standing policy of squeezing their customers out of every last cent.
The good news: Europeans have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to budget airlines and the rest of us can benefit from this with some creative backward planning.
Here’s how to do it:
1. Click on this link: Cheap flights to Greece
2. Below all the budget airline icons, you’ll see a section titled Low Cost Flights to the Eastern Mediterranean. Click on the city or island you want to fly into.
3. Check out the budget flights that are available. Where do they originate? For example, both German Wings and Easy Jet fly into Mykonos, so it comes down to deciding which European city you want to transit through.
4. Keep an eye out for the cheapest flights you can find to your transit city.
Let’s say I wanted to book a cheap flight to Santorini through the budget airline Fly Thomas Cook out of London Gatwick. I would check for available dates and I would go ahead and book the Thomas Cook flight. I would then scrounge around for a cheap flight from D.C. to London Gatwick. This usually comes out much less expensive than booking full fare to Greece on a major airline.
